Pete Rock & CL Smooth. Pure hip hop. Classic 1992. I reminisce over when hip hop was pure. Pete Rock & CL Smooth - They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.) (Video): https://youtu.be/BONgL61snlM

At the end of the day, after all of my years diving deep into hip hop in all its forms, being one of the biggest pieces of my life, this is still to me the greatest hip hop song of all time.

It was on KMEL 106.1 in the Bay when I first heard this cut in the fall of '92, about a year into junior high. On an FM-only Walkman, no less.  Nearly a quarter-century on, nothing sounds quite like this. More's the pity.

All these kids on here saying "I was born in 98" or whatever and "I wish I lived in this era", it's up to y'all to keep this shit here alive, the more you buy that new shit, that fake shit, the more you support that, then the more blessings like this right here die, you gotta grab that brass ring and pass this torch, real hip hop is on serious life support, look around, something's gotta give quick

New generation of hip hop, please stop coming out with whack shit.  Take a lesson from the past generations and modernize it.

All these retards in the comments are living in the past even though they weren't alive to witness it, honestly get a reality check, yes this is a good song, but that doesn't mean all rap was just as amazing back then. At the time this song was released, the white pop rap takeover was coming into place with shitty artists like Vanilla Ice. Grow up idiots

To this day, I still jam to this!! Excellent choice

There are many great hip hop tracks but only a few rated as truly iconic. This is a brilliantly produced tune with inspiring lyrics and effortless flow. TROY is definitely one of the most iconic tracks ever.

Wishing about being born earlier is futile, a waste of energy. Believe me when I say, " ALLAH ( GOD ) knew exactly where He wanted you to be placed in this time & space. You are living in a time of instant info. You can see what's literally happening halfway cross this globe. In the palm of your hands is a device that will give you damn near any song, record, speech, etc from the 70's, 80's, 90'. Like an earlier poster said, " pick up the baton of classic hip hop and pass it on, make sure its revered, remembered, and celebrated. Salaam...

This is back when hip hop music was real and impacted true life events on people along with a great use of instruments. Rap now is all about bass and talking about how many hoes you fuck. Nobody cares. This song will live forever

This was the TALENT from the early 90's. These guys were not rappers, they were poets. This genre of music started in the late 70's and died to this over commercialized music industry in the early 2000's. TRUE talent. The early rappers sampled some of the most soulful jazz tracks which made their work absolutely awesome.

If Hip Hop had an anthem, this song would be it! If Hip Hop was put into a space shuttle and sent off to the far reaches of the galaxy for other life forms to see what we're all about, this song HAS to be it! i dont care who your favorite MC is, believe me, they heard this song and were like, wow!
