Originally, the Tipiṭaka was recorded in Pāḷi, a common language of Asia. I believe the publication of the World Tipiṭaka in the Roman script, based on the Burmese-script edition revised at the B.E. 2500 Great International Council in Myanmar (1957), is very significant academically.

Scholars who have been doing research in the field of linguistic, religion, and history will be interested in this edition of the Tipiṭaka as it is a great piece of research as well as an invaluable treasure since it paves the way to a more extensive research in other fields besides the study of religion.

I have seen the result of the World Tipiṭaka Project in the Roman Script and learned that besides the printed version there is also a World Tipiṭaka Database which can be conveniently and easily accessed through e-Tipiṭaka Quotation WebService (www.tipitakaquotation.net) to search for the Tipiṭaka Studies Reference.

Moreover, the differences in the printing of the variant readings of the Tipiṭaka using the national scripts of various countries are also printed. Therefore, this World Tipiṭaka has a tremendous academic value, reflecting the high level of skill in computer technology capable of creating a useful database accessible by all...

Highlight of the World Tipiṭaka Recitation 2008 worldtipi... - 81 views - 6 months ago
Highlight of the World Tipiṭaka Recitation 2008 includes audio and video archives of the special event organised nationwide in memory of Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana, Royal Matriarch of Thailand and Patron of the World Tipiṭaka.

The mass recitation of the Buddha's words in Pāḷi, the original language of Dhamma, was participated by people from all walks of life.

All those who joined the event recited from the World Tipiṭaka, not in the Thai script, but in the Roman script, a universal script of the world. It is hoped that through this meritorious act, millions of people in Thailand and the Tipiṭaka patrons in various countries will realize that the Tipiṭaka is not limited to Sri Lanka, Myanmar or Japan but is a world heritage, and that it could be recited together in Pāḷi, --the indigenous language of Dhamma-- transcending all national and other parochial confines imposed by local languages, national scripts, and individual belief systems.

The event thus fulfilled the wish of the late beloved Princess Galyani Vadhana who encouraged Dhamma Society to make a message of Wisdom and Peace in the Tipiṭaka widespread among the common people worldwide.

In 2004, the Princess graciously accepted the Honorary Presidency of the World Tipiṭaka Project in Roman script and in 2005 lead a special royal Tipiṭaka pilgrimage from Bangkok to Colombo --a historic trip less than 24 hour-- to present the inaugural commemorative set in 40 volumes as a royal gift of Dhamma to the President of Sri Lanka, the cradle of the world's written Tipiṭaka.

May the Words of the Buddha Long Enduring !

For almost 3,000 years, the words of the Buddha have been preserved in pristine purity in the Pāḷi language of the "Tipiṭaka", a complete collection of Buddhist scripture in the authoritative Theravāda Tradition.

For the first time this year, the Roman-script edition of the World Tipiṭaka was used as a standard text at Maha Bodhi Society of India's Annual Tipiṭaka Chanting.

In the main square under the Sacred Bodhi Tree of Buddhagaya, Venerable Monks from all over the world including, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, Thailand and Australia, etc., have gathered to chant the World Tipiṭaka Edition.

The newly printed 600 sets of the "Tipiṭaka Chanting Version --Majjhimanigāya in 3 Volumes-- are presented to participating international monks as a royal gift of Dhamma from the late Princess Galyani Vadhana of Thailand. The 40-volume World Tipiṭaka Edition in Roman script is a gift of Wisdom & Peace from the people of Thailand.

This short clip shows the Nepalese Venerable Monks and the World Tipiṭaka Edition in Roman script, the first group of venerable monks to have received the Roman-script Tipiṭaka Edition from Maha Bodhi Society of India.

Note the Roman-script Tipiṭaka Edition by Dhamma Society was published in A4 Size with a gold-colour cover.

The World Pāḷi Tipiṭaka for Sri Lanka, Thailand, & Sweden

On March 6, 2005, Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana, Honorary President of Tipiṭaka Presentation Worldwide, graciously presented an inaugural 40-volume World Tipitaka Edition to the Presiden of Sri Lanka in Colombo upon a presidential invitation. On August 15, 2005, two inaugural sets were graciously presented by the Princess to the President of the Constitutional Court of Thailand in Bangkok and the Vice-chancellor of Uppsala University in Sweden.

The Consitutional Court of the Kingdom of Thailand is the only national institution in Thailand that have received the the World Tipiṭaka from the Honorary President.

In the West, the Kingdom of Sweden has proved itself, domestically and internationally, to be the promoter of peace and wisdom-based deveopment, as well as having been in the forefront of intelligent, responsible social and environmental protection. The Dhamma Society discerned that the Kingdom of Sweden would be the first and the most appropriated country in which to entrust the most Sacred Text of Theravada Buddhasasana, for preservation, and for development of a truely wisdom-based culture.

In 2005, Princess Galyani Vadhana, the Royal Matriarch and Honorary President of the World Tipitaka Project graciously presented the World Tipitaka to Uppsala University upon a formal request from the University Vice Chancellor and Chief Librarian of the Carolina Reiviva. The Royal Presentation Ceremony took place in Bangkok on August 15, 2005 and on September 13, patron members of the Dhamma Society made a Tipiṭaka Pilgrimage to Sweden to hand-over the royal gift of Tipitaka in Roman script to the Library Carolina Rediviva, Uppsala University, Uppsala, in Sweden.

With this smooth and simple handing-over process, the World Tipiṭaka Edition has come to a happy conclusion in the west, after 50 years from its first inception of the Great International Council in Burma, including 6 more years of proof-reading as well as database-formating between 1999-2005 in Thailand.

The Pāḷi Tipiṭaka is a gift of Dhamma and Peace for the World. Dhamma Society welcomes participation and cooperation from Peace-loving international community worldwide.

King of Siam Tipitaka & Roman-script Tipitaka, 1893-2005 worldtipi... - 816 views - 1 year ago
KING OF SIAM TIPITAKA, 1893

"Pali" is an old Indian dialect of the mass, spoken in the Indian Subcontinent over 3000 years ago. During the lifetime of the Buddha, Pali was the Dhamma-language of the Buddhist teaching and thus finally became the written medium of Buddhist scripture, the Tipitaka.

During an early period, Pali Tipitaka was committed to memory and was propagated by Theravada Buddhist monks orally from generation to generation. It was first written on palm leave some 400 years after the demise of Buddha or in the first century BC.

The first written Pali Tipitaka took place in old Sri Lanka when the entire Tipitaka was inscribed on palm leaves --in Sinhalese script-- for the first time. Consequently, the Tipitaka on palm leave was the conventional depository of the Buddhist Theravada scripture for over 2000 years.

In 1893, King Chulalongkorn of Siam revolutionised the traditional Buddhist depository convention --the King published the Tipitaka in Book-form for the first time. In stead of inscribing the sacred Pali texts by hand in old Khmer script, the King ordered a new edition, totaling 39 volumes, to be printed in modern-typeface of the Siam script.

With the efficiency of printing technology of the day, such as, Western printing machinery and local book-binding in Bangkok, these newly edited Siam-script Tipitakas were sent as royal gifts to 260 institutes across five continents in 1896.

At the end, this documentary shows the handing-over of the 40-volume Royal Gift of Tipitaka to Uppsala University by Tipitaka Patrons from Thailand, Sri Lanka, and Sweden.

The sounds were recorded live during pilgrimage with a musicial background from Swedish contemporary classic, a gift from Swedish Patron to Dhamma Society Fund.

The World Tipiṭaka Project in Roman Script is a gift of Wisdom & Peace to the World.

The Project was initiated in 1999 by Dhamma Society Fund to publish the entire Pāḷi Tipiṭaka, a 40-volume edition of Theravāda Buddhist scripture in Pāḷi language. This newly proof-read and open-standard database edition is the first complete Pāḷi Tipiṭaka from the B.E.2500 (1957) Great International Council Manuscript to be ever published in the Roman script.

The work unexpectedly took over 6 years to complete in Bangkok.

In 2004, Her Royal Highness Princess Galayni Vadhana, the Royal Matriarch of Thailand, graciously accepted to become the Honorary President of Tipiṭaka Presentation Worldwide. in 2005, upon a presidential invitation, the Princess made a special pilgrimage from Bangkok to Colombo and presented the inaugural set to the President of Sri Lanka.
