Love the believer, not the belief.

I wanted to tell you this the other day but didn't have time. I have no problem with you. In fact, I think you're an intelligent guy. It was not my intent to start a fight in your chat room. My problem wasn't with the atheist in your vid. It was with the christians who let him speak anti-christian things there. Others on your forum came at me hostile. By the way, I think atheists have every right to be heard just like anyone else. I just think a church is the wrong forum. Anyways, don't take my opinions as a personal attack on you. It is not.

"Entomology" is the study of insects. I guess you mean "etymology", and why is that relevant to the above quote? The quote is in present-day English and uses "faith" in the religious sense, unless you draw a line in the 14th century and claim that the meaning of words has to remain as was usual then? For all I care, the Greek "pistis" could have meant "absolute certainty", but that still doesn't mean what it refers to is true. It only means that a collection of stories written and edited by many different authors states that some people 2000 years ago allegedly were persuaded that a three-day rotting corpse in a hot climate was magically poofed alive again. Plus, I'm pretty sure that Muslims, Hindus, ... are also "persuaded" and have "confidence", "trust", whatever you like, in their respective fairytales. That "persuasion", "trust", "confidence", etc. they have doesn't convince you either, no matter what label they put on it.

I was actually going to make the same exact comment that Velayasha made. It seems that your understanding of the entomology of the word "faith" is off. In the Greek language the word faith denotes a trust and commitment that is wrought by persuasion. For example - the disciples did not have "faith" that Christ did not rise from the dead, but they genuinely believed so, even though they did not see the literal resurrection. They trusted that his presence after his death denoted a resurrection. The idea that you quote is called "mere belief", not faith. This does injustice to the idea of faith and ultimately makes the idea accordion; people have far strung notions of it.

I actually like your saying that you posted."Love the believer, not the belief". I'm sure then that you can relate to believers when we say,"Love the sinner, not the sin".

I take issue with your qoute about faith though. "Faith is the denial of observation so that belief may be preserved." Mr. Munchkin was absolutely wrong about that. Faith is actually the hope of things unseen. We should be advanced enough as a species to know that our 5 sense do not have the final say on existence.
