A short clip of Biz Markie DJing alongside his MC Cool V, secretly recorded at a live show some time ago. I hope this recording shines some light on Biz's oft disputed claim of having a promo 12" of Bob James "Take Me To The Mardi Gras' with a 4 bar open break without bells.

Well..that is what you hear in this short clip, but he was playing with serato so not conclusive evidence of its actual existence. Suggestions are that he has panned a stereo recording with only the bells in one channel, which I guess is easily possible...

So...is this the real deal? Or is it just another amazing figment of The Diabolical's imagination, or maybe ust a hoax to wind the trainspotters up? Whatever it is, it's a bit of hip hop history and here it is in all it's un-bell like glory!

Enjoy...

  • I Co Sign The No Bells It's Real!

  • I heard that the record was part of a gift or promo package given to CTI execs that consisted of a new briefcase or satchel with 5 12"s inside of which Mardi Gras was one. I was told this by Mr. Dibbs who supposedly was told directly by the Biz himself.

  • @funkyfriedninjamonk I wonder if someone EQ'd the bells out recorded it, and pressed it on vinyl. Bootlegged it?

  • iv'e done an ok job at EQing the bells out...however there is a lot of dynamic difference between the bell version and the non bell version in this clip.

  • @equiknockz you djed with Biz? That's so dope!!!! Will if he got the masters or had any kind of access that's even crazier!!!

  • I djed with Biz tonight @funkyfriedninjamonk. Heard in the headphones and it sounds like he or somebody he knew had the masters and took the bells out. On his serato, it says Bob James - Take Me To Mardi Gras no bells final. Sounds processed to me.

  • WTF?!?!?! So this is no myth? This would make Biz even more of the DJ man cause he gots some rarers no doubt. Ha wanna know what Quest has to say about this? @djtouche Your right about cancelation. This sounds legit done by the mixers or engineers.

  • On the original the bells are panned slightly to one side but even if you take the other channel & put it in mono they are still audible. It's not a hard / full pan.

So even if he has a version where they ARE hard panned, & can therefore be "removed" , this would still be a different pressing to the one on the album and 45.

Phase cancellation wouldn't really work either, as that would interfere with the high & mids of the drums, & the radio / TV voices behind. Not a re-edit either.

    Sounds real.
