Some music is so simple and beautiful, even a hack like me can't muck it up too badly. The dulcimer is a Folkroots, made in 2003, with a long (29 1/4") VSL. The melody is based on Iris DeMent's performance of "Pretty Saro" in the film "Songcatcher", and I've tuned down to match her voice.

Thanks to Randy Adams for inspiring me. Look for his much worthier rendition at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t69rY8_RG6o&fmt=18

  • Could you tell me what your tuning is? I love this but my tab that I have is DAD and it sounds nothing like this! Thanks

  • @msvivianrae13 Thanks for your comments. It's in DAD, but not in standard pitch (A440). I tuned about 15 cents flat, to match the lower pitch used by Irene Dement. If you're working from tabs in standard pitch it should sound fine, but every note will be sharp compared to those in this video. In any case, I encourage you to put the tab aside for awhile. Try to pick out this very simple melody without it. Most tabs will trap you on the melody strings; this tune belongs on the middle string.

  • Thank you so much for your quick reply!. That is very helpful info. I have been sitting here trying to figure it out and watching your video over and over, but I am so new at this it is a bit challenging! I will use your info and try and pick it instead of using tabs. I am just learning to even read those, so I will see how I do without using that method. It is just such a wonderful song and I love that movie as well, it's one of my favorites. Thanks again!
