Everyone loves food, but University of Minnesota College of Food, Agriculture and Natural Resource Sciences Dean Allen Levine says there are very real, scientific reasons behind why people not only overeat, but choose certain foods to overeat. When the holiday season is approaching, it becomes even more evident that when given the choice between vegetables and sweets, many people will choose sweets. And in tests with lab rats, they too will often eat the filling inside the Oreo before the cookie portion of it. These habits can be overcome, with small tricks like smaller plates and more.

  • If one gets clean of excess sugars, preservatives, and additives, then you can begin diagnosing your own nutritional needs via relative measure. When you get a craving, your body is referencing memories of flavor associated with the nutrients that it received post consumption. If you crave pizza, then the constituent nutrients of that are possible candidates for what you need. If you think about what part of the pizza you crave, this narrows it down, and you can eat an alternative for the same.
