Monkey Island (Dau Ky) in Vietnam

On a rainy day, we went to Dau Ky (Monkey Island), which is a long drive plus a ferry ride across a very muddy river.

There are swarms of monkeys at this former Viet Cong base, which was built here because of the crocodiles in the river to keep the Americans away. There were so many, Neiri called them tree rats. They were very aggressive too! I don't blame them. The guide had a slingshot that he would threaten to use on them and they would all scamper at the sight of it. I got bit by one when I sat on their swing set (I guess they're very territorial) and Neiri found out the male monkeys are not afraid of women, because one tried to take her bag and she got in a tug of war with it...too bad I didn't get that on video!

We saw some schoolgirls wearing cute white ao dai on their way home. And I got outsmarted by a girl peddling lottery tickets. I told her I'd buy some if I could take a picture of her and Neiri, but after I handed her my money, she wouldn't take a picture and ran off laughing. But I managed to snap a picture of her anyway when she wasn't looking and won her over with the videos of the monkeys on my camera, and Neiri and I spent the ferry ride talking to her. A sweet girl with street smarts!
