  • how do you germinate the seeds in aquaponics?

  • this was warm enough with water and nutrients that all that was needed was to place them in some stones and they would germinate that way.

  • This was all new to me at the time and I know I made mistakes or needed to tweak it. This was all about learning and getting my hands into it. I learned about the importance of the bacteria or that the media needs to be deeper. Anyway it was worth all failures for I am ready for 2009 now after learning and gaining knowledge for self and future.

  • Interesting system. How is it working? Are the plants able to support themselves in such a shallow growbed?

  • It worked ok, I am waiting for spring 2009 now and a newer version. Plants need food/oxygen and the rock bed never dried out because the system ran on a timer yet later I let it run 24/7. next year I am "renting" some local river fish by catching them and using them then letting them go later in fall.

  • what are the plants you are growing??

  • I just realized I have a pumpkin growing in this and the pumpkin is hanging over the side now, it will fall off the vine so I will brace it soon. Funny thing is there has been no fish in the for over 1 month just rocks and natural algae growth, oh and some compost tea now and then ;)

  • Poor Fish!

  • @NOSMOJEFF but in general, how is the seeds usually germinated. i know nothing of aquaponics...

  • you can also try to run your water through a cup of crushed oyster shells that will help balance your ph

  • T-t-t-t-TODAY JUNIOR!!!!!!!!!

  • basically, high/low ph can stress/kill bacteria responsible for converting ammonia to nitrate/nitrite, not to mention fish/plants. so having ph between 5 and 8 is generally reasonable. but i wouldn't worry now since it seems plants are thriving, by visual observation, ph level is regulated well. keep up the good work.
