I think the movie got a bit of a bum rap. Obviously, it's not gonna measure up to the book, and there's a couple of things I wish they hadn't taken out (most notably, finding Sophie's brother), but I still think it was pretty good. I look forward to the next one.
The Popery was involved in a much greater hoax - one that deals with the very foundations of history itself. B.C./A.D. chronology was crafted by Jesuits in the XVI cy. Today the mere thought of questioning it seems preposterous - just like the notion of a rotating earth in the epoch of Galileo. Chronology is drastically shorter and dramatically different says mathematician Prof.Dr.Fomenko in his book “History: Fiction or Science?”, more daring than Dan Brown at his wildest (2913621058).

I think the extended version that comes out on April 28, 2009 tells about him. It's 30 mins longer then the one that was shown in Theatres
