The best version of this song, and the one this performer rips off, er, covers, is Koerner, Ray, and Glover's. It's from their "Retun of Koerner, Ray and Glover" album of 1965. Sadly, Dave Ray died in 2002, but Koerner and Glover are still alive. As far as I know they are still performing in the Minneapolis area. "Spider John" Koerner used to be a semi-regular on Prairie Home Companion.

Way to ruin a song

this is a chopped version from the record version I had back in the 70s, which was much longer and had much more humor , maybe this is the orginal version from leadbelly, but I would like to get the 70s version, very funny stuff , this is ok.

you left out the weed part sort of disappointed

i do love ledbelly but this is fair play excellence! thanks for sharing!
Does anybody have a copy of the long version from about '68 to '70, very funny..g uy got on board with 1,000 feet of rope. Who did that version? It was on the radio all the time back then.

I believe you're thinking of the Jamie Brockett version, with some substance abuse etc.
Wonder if Lord Buckley ever riffed on this one?

Glad you enjoyed it. Keep songs alive - play them!

I've heard John do this a number of times over the past 40 years and it is always outstanding. I was playing a borrowed 12 string one time and it just sort of came out... but nowhere nearly as good as John's. He sometimes will throw in some Leadbelly field hollers, too.
