Every day in the morning, my fish spawn and fight over females.
This video is the first time I have seen the hybrid M. herbertaxelrodi actually go after a female, and more importantly succeed or get close to it.
The most interesting part I think, is the fact that both the M. lacustris male and the M. herbertaxelrodi male are going after the same female (M. lacustris). Not only fighting over the female but at the same time trying to spawn with her, which leads to several instances of what looks like a fishy menage-a-trois.
She seemed all-too-willing to get it on with either one of them, as she did her part more than once, with both of them separately AND at the same time.
I dont know if the M. herbertaxelrodi succeeding in spawning, but the M. lacustris male sure did. Due to being scared by the M. herbertaxelrodi male during the spawning, the eggs go flying (see in-video comment).
I dont know if the video translates what took place well...I was amazed and super excited after all this took place, so I thought someone might benefit from the video.
Any comments or questions are welcome!
i got this guy from The Fish Collection about 30 minutes from my house. I buy my rainbows from two small LFS, no chain stores. Unfortunately no breeders in the area to buy from!
At the point in this video that boesemani has been with me for about 10 months...by next week he will have been with me for 1 year!

Wow, where do you get your boesemani? Mine isn't even nearly that colorful. After 10 AM, mine loses all his blue and his head gets white :(

thanks for the comment. none of these fish were bought at a big chain store. quite the contrary, they were all bought from 2 smaller dedicated fish stores. Two of the rainbows I bought online and had shipped from Michigan!
Good luck with your fish tank :-)

Great video! :D
I wish our LFS would carry more variety of rainbowfish.
Yours look so nice, and your tank , from what I can see of it looks fan-freakin-tastic!
