  • It looks as though there are only 2 females in the whole pond and they are gripped by males in amplexus. The male frog count seems to be about 27 including the 2 on top of the 2 females. That means there are 25 more males than females! How has your frog population survived? The males are feeling each other to see if they're female, when they sense they are not they move on to the next frog, desperately searching for a female to grip and sit on so they can be the 1 that fertilises the spawn.

  • Hello Harry.

Always more boys than girls in a frog population so that they compete and the strongest boys get to mate.

Most of the male frogs you see will not fertilize anything.

I get about 15 clumps of spawn in my 6 foot pond which is plenty.

The boys will hang around for a week or more after spawning has technically stopped, in hope!

Population limited by how much food in mine and surrounding gardens.

I have no snails anymore in my garden.

Before the pond, I had literally thousands....

  • @cycleboy123 but i read frogs dont eat in breeding season??

  • @londonlad777 Thanks for your comment.

True. I mean that my population of frogs is limited outside the breeding season to the food in mine and neighbours gardens-I can't exactly leave food out in a "bird feeder" type way!

We have compost heaps and piles of logs etc. for food and cover.

Used to be plaugued with snails. Most are now gone since the pond was installed which is just about the best thing of all.....

Those frogs are just great little characters when I come accross them in the garden.
