SNL's second show of the season was hosted by actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt and opened with a mildly amusing parody of the Kelly and Michael show which then lead into an opening monologue that turned into a predictable dance number which I felt as though I've seen them do a dozen times before. But then the show took a sharp turn for the better when they went to a must see commercial parody tearing into the undecided voters in the Presidential Election who still aren't sure about thinks like when the election is being held and who is actually running. I loved it almost as much as the swipe they took at the Republican Party in their GOB Tampon commercial -- because who knows more about a woman's body than old Republican men? A two part parody of the Des Equis beer commercials, with the son of the most interesting man in the world, gave Joseph Gordon-Levitt his best material of the night -- although I wasn't as impressed by the detective scene or the hypnotist bits they did -- neither one pushed the envelop enough for my tastes -- but Seth Myers swooped in with a stellar edition of Weekend Update which took some hard jabs at both Mitt Romney and President Obama, especially in the segment called, "What are you doing," in which Seth Myers took President Obama to the woodshed for making a small gaff during his Telemundo appearance this week, arguing that all Obama has to do is lay low and let Mitt Romney keep shooting himself in the foot until the election's over. It was a brilliant threading of the needle, letting Obama have it for making a mistake while still being supportive of his campaign. And just when I thought things couldn't any worse for Mitt Romney on the show, Kate McKinnon showed up next to Seth delivering an hilarious and biting impersonation of Ann Romney, following up on the remarks she made in a rather whining defense of her husband from the attacks he's been taking from fellow Republicans. You can be sure that MSNBC will be re-playing that one a lot -- just as I would expect Fox and Friends to take the show to task for never going after Michelle Obama in the same way.
All in all the show was rather un-even, with their political bits delivering the biggest laughs -- but I thought Jay Pharoah really came into his own tonight, especially on weekend update where he skewered ESPN's Stephen A Smith. Now, if he can only get his Barack Obama down that well I could be a happy man.
Finally, I loved the musical guest, Mumford and Sons and thought it was hilarious to slip them into the bar scene as a Beatles cover band. The show will be back in two weeks on October 6th with Daniel Craig hosting -- so I guess we can expect a James Bond scene or two -- and perhaps with Fred Armisen dusting off his Queen Elizabeth impersonation.
