http://2dphotography.ca/blog - in this video, we demonstrate how we used $65 worth of equipment to build a fairly smooth and reliable dolly and track. The test footage turned out quite nice and shows how the dolly actually performs.

  • Noticed that one of the back wheels did not touch the track - did you manage to adjust this and how? (Gotta love how youtube commenters micro manage / nitpick every detail of every DIY project they see :) )

  • @JacanaProductions Not really. The pipes aren't perfectly straight so we're going to see some wheels not touching at certain points. It's not really a concern and doesn't affect the footage. Really just need four points of contact to ensure that we're stable. Nice job noticing, though.

  • hey guys, whats the name of the song at 3:38?

  • @kidmeetslitweed Not sure, but it's just a cheesy apple loop :P

  • This is great. It's definitely one of the smoother DIY dollys I've seen. What if I wanted to get the camera higher? How would you suggest mounting my tripod to the dolly?

  • @neverhood311 I wouldn't mound a tripod to it. I don't think it would retain it's smoothness. You could build a much larger version of it and then put a tripod on top of that, but for this what we do is simply stack things underneath it to get it at the height we want. Hope that helps

  • Thanks for the awesome video guys!

We're going to try and start incorporating some of these techniques in our videos.

Appreciate it! Thumbs up for you!

  • I just realized I have most of this already at my house. Since I plan on making short films, music videos, and eventually full-length movies and such, this will be great to practice on. Thanks guys. :D

  • @unseenocean also there's a feature in adobe after effects called motion stabilizer that stabilize shaky footage

  • Congratulations!

    good video.
