Every year in Guild Wars, on the Asian-themed continent of Cantha, everyone gathers on Shing Jea Island to celebrate the Canthan New Year. This always corresponds to the Chinese New Year in real life.

This year was the Year of the Ox...

Paid for by the Canthan Bureau of Tourism

Concept by Billy Bughead

Video captured from Guild Wars by Arenanet, a game who's Terms of Service do not prohibit such use in a non-commercial video such as this.

Public domain/royalty-free music provided by the Live Music Archive:
"Ru Goa" by Vienna Teng
"Green Island Serenade" by Vienna Teng

Special thanks to Matt Hawes of The Happy Show

http://www.youtube.com/user/TheHappyShow
for recommending the Live Music Archive

Candid cameos (they didn't know I was filming): Roc Dis Joint, Queen Kitiara, Archangel Silver, Tidus Yumemiru, Fallen Angel

Sorry if the video quality stinks. This is the first video I've made without Windows Movie Maker, and I had a lot less choices for video compression.

  • love the song u used for this vid - oh! i remember that we were taking screen shots lol! nice work man great memories ;)

  • Thanks, can't believe how quick the year went by. Hope to have some stuff up soon for the Year of the Tiger, but I didn't film much -- was to busy filming in the real world for the Chinese New Year, in Chinatown...

Oh, and the songs are by Vienna Tang...

  • do you know the name of the song?? the pronunciation isn't that clear..

  • The first song is called Ru Goa, an old Taiwanese song.

The second song is Ludao Xiaoyequ, another Taiwanese song.

Both of these songs are covered by Vienna Teng, the woman singing in the video.

  • wow, thanks...wanted to know more about her...found the songs at the Live Music Archive...she has such a beautiful voice...

  • Well, the Live Music Archive said they're called "Ru Goa" and "Green Island Serenade", by Vienna Teng. I download some of the other stuff available, the rest of it was all in English and she said she was born in America, so that's why you might not be able to understand her accent. And not sure if Mandarin or Cantonese. Lol but it's gotta be better than my accent, as all I know is Gung Hay Fat Choy, Sun Nien Fai Lok, and ni hao. Hey, how do you say "Happy birthday, Candy!" in Chinese? :-)

  • OK, it's Mandarin. Not sure which you speak.

Trying to put a link in but YouTube keeps eating the comment lol I'm trying to link to a vid on YouTube so don't know what the big deal is. Click porcupine179's link to go to his/her channel, click the favorites, and then click related videos to get to another version of this song, or search Vienna Teng, or duh I'll email you lol

  • glad you liked it...had fun filming you guys, wondering if you noticed what I was doing...took a while to find the right song, but when I found it, oh, perfect...

  • LOL you snagged the mysterious Reign Alliance

Great job on the vid ,I like the mood of song , the font and narrative very cool

Canthan Bureau got their money worth!

  • Thanks...yes, this particular area is quite nice...they do special events a few times a year, but they've never done oxes before, nore will they again, unless the game is still around the next time the Year of the Ox rolls around. So I had to get this on tape. Tried to get a clip with a conga-line full of folks running with the bulls but my hard drive got too full from all the clips lol Thanks for watching...
