I am retired. By my chosen profession's standards I am an old man. My badge now hangs on the wall sitting in a shadow box flanked by a few plaques and awards and wings that long ago I wore on a Coast Guard uniform. I have saved my last life; I have answered my last alarm. Today I wear the vest of the Red Cross. The calls I answer now are to deliver food and drink to a generation that still have walls to fill and who have yet to gather their shadow boxes. It gets me close to the sirens and lights once again. Instead of a holstered gun, these days I arrive on scene with a camera. I am privileged to get in close with these firefighters as they do what they do. I leave the comfort of my home and I once again can share the company of brave souls who understand that their lives may just be worth that of another. In an uncertain world filled with unknown hazards, theirs is a noble profession. I thank this new generation of Guardians for allowing me to walk in their shadows and remember days when a calling was more than a mere motto. To all those who run to what others are running away from - I dedicate this tribute. So Others may Live
