One of the highlights that came from 2010's Despicable Me is the cute, yellow co-horts of Groo known simply as The Minions and now it looks like theses sidekicks are moving up to leading men...er...thing territory.

According to Deadline, Universal is setting a 2014 release for The Minions sequel that will feature the antics of Groo's henchman as well as other characters from the world of Despicable Me. The Minions have become not only huge film stars, but also inspired a new ride at Universal Studios in Orlando and are top sellers in toys and online. One obstacle they have against them though is the fact that they don't actually speak, except in a language only they understand. This is perfectly fine in a sidekick capacity, but could be problematic as the focus of an hour and a half plus movie. Universal apparently feels confident they have that issue under control though and are eager to create a possible new franchise.

A sequel to Despicable Me is currently in production for a July 3rd, 2013 release with the Minions sequel to follow a year later. Steve Carell is reprising his role for the sequel as the voice of "Groo" and will be joined by the likes of Al Pacino, Kristen Wiig, Russell Brand and Steve Coogan. It's unclear if "Groo" will be making a cameo in the Minions spinoff.

This isn't the first sidekicks to get their own movie. It was recently revealed that the penguins from the Madagascar films will be getting their very own spinoff as well, currently slated for a 2015 release. So are you excited to see the Minions on the big screen in their own feature? Let us know in the comments and be sure to subscribe to our channel to stay up to date on the latest movie news.
