Although some choose to pass off Jamiroquai as a Stevie Wonder-clone, the band has amassed a steady stream of hits in its native U.K. and has experienced chart success in just about every other area of the world with an irresistible blend of house rhythms and '70s-era soul/funk. The band has gone though several lineup changes during their career, but through it all their leader has remained singer/songwriter Jason Kay (aka J.K.). Born on December 30, 1969, in Stretford, Manchester, Kay's mother, Karen, was a jazz singer who regularly performed at nightclubs, and in the '70s had her own TV show. After leaving home at the age of 15, Kay found himself homeless and in trouble with the law (by committing petty crimes to get by). After a near-death experience (where he was attacked and stabbed) and being arrested for a crime he did not commit, Kay decided to return home, where he chose to pursue a legitimate career over crime: music. Kay didn't have a band to back up his compositions, but he quickly came up with his future project's name, Jamiroquai, a name that combined the name of a Native American tribe (the Iroquois) along with the music-based word, jam.

The kids need education
And the streets are never clean
I've seen a certain disposition, prevailing in the wind,
Sweet change if anybody's listening?
Emergency on Planet Earth
Is that life that I am witnessing
Or just another wasted birth

We got emergency
Emergency on Planet Earth

Think we're standing for injustice
White gets two and black gets five years,
Took me quite a while to suss this,
But now I know my head is cleared
And a little boy in hungry land, is just a picture in the news,
Change shoes
Won't see him in the TV advertising,
Cause it might put you off your food

We got emergency
Emergency on Planet Earth

  • He was such a revelation back in '93! Still very relevant today!!

  • Yeah we've got an emergency on planet Earth alright...too many people have lost good taste in music! They would rather listen to shitty half-assed dance tracks than songs with real messages and remarkable musicians behind them like this. Let's put an end to this raging epidemic and give it up for one of the greatest bands ever created...all hail Jamiroquai! :-D

  • So listen to 1970s; Skyy,Dynasty,Shalamar,Aurra,Chic,Sister Sledge,The whispers,Change,The early SoS band, the early Prince albums,The Sylvers,Brass Construction,The Barkays,Delegation,Tom Browne,Quincy jones/Rod Temperton productions,Heatwave,Deodato,One way,ect ect, then check out the thousands of uploaded 1970s Soul Train funk videos, then come and tell me what you think Jamiroquai invented 20 years later!

  • @ortiznyc No but there is no doubt that this is a clone of late 70s Funk, that much i can tell you .And Its totally true that most of the early Jamiroquai stuff comes from Stevie Wonder ,Roy Ayres and Patrice Rushen. Anyone who knows the Funk is aware of that and even he (JK) admits that they were some of his influences so why is it hating?

  • @LordBrony Really? Go back and listen to Stevie Wonders songs in the key of life album. And while your at it listen to mid 70s Roy Ayres, Issac Hayes, Johnny Hammond, Earth wind and fire and Patrice Rushen to name but a few. Granted this track isnt exactly Stevie wonder, its Kool and the gang ,Isley brothers and Nile Rodgers with a bit of the Brothers Johnson thrown in but stevie led the way to this style of groove .Jamiroquai didnt invent this. Its 100% 1970s Funk.I KNOW I WAS THERE.

  • Prefer this intro to the single version.

  • no stevie clone, stop hating!
