Steam Locomotive operations in Canada lasted longer than it did in the United States. Both the Canadian National Railroad and the Canadian Pacific Railroad were still rostering a substantial number of steam locomotives in the 1950's.

This period film will show a number of these locomotives in mainline service on both railroads.

Both freight and passenger trains from Eastern and Western Canada are featured. Just as interesting as the steam locomotives are a fascinating assortment of freight and passenger cars, from ice reefers to truss rod passenger coaches in active service.

  • one question, why did steam have to be replaced? Many steamers are more powerful than diesles today.

  • I remember these old Steamers well and I miss them.

  • He starts off at the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum in Chattanooga, Tennessee, home to the Oldest Operating Mainline Steamer in America, Southern 2-8-0 #630, built by the American Locomotive Works in Richmond, VA. in February, 1904. #630 is the 2nd oldest operating steamer in Tennessee, second only to Southern 2-8-0 #154 at the Three Rivers Rambler in Knoxville.

  • More static-display Canadian steam engines need to be brought to life, wonder if a fund can be started?

  • Bring back the Canadian Steam Program right now!

  • @Cockroach2008 We're all bored of hearing your crap over and over again, please just do us all a favour and crawl into a hole and die, the whole of society would benifit!

  • @Railskunk136 Your apology is accepted. My mother is a great woman!

The steam locomotive is just a machine. My car is just a machine.

Steam locomotives were a part of an evolving transportation system. They have been documented, filmed & photographed all that is necessary. Preservation of these relics is unnecessary.

It is long past time to junk, scrap, strip, cut & melt them.

The parts are worth plenty if someone will take & sell them.

Gauges & whistles sell on the black market very fast!

  • @Railskunk136 I spoke to my mother about your suggestion. She has no objection & thinks you may have an idea there.

It is delightful to know that many of these junkers have been scrapped. Now it is time to go back for the rest to cut them apart & melt them.

Any day a steam locomotive is cut apart & melted is a very good day, indeed!

While they await their fate at the hands of the scrappers torch, it is splendid to know that none are in commercial service & many are in financial trouble!

  • Please bring back the Canadian Steam Locomotives back in service right now! It's been a long time since they been sitting for a few decades!

  • Long live steam!
