i tried it and it worked. the square actually became smaller after 4 pieces were switched but its extremely hard to notice the size difference with our naked eye. good trick!

He doesn't keep two of the yellow pieces in the black at first. And used the extra surface area to make the small black square in the middle. The angles helps the illusion. I liked it.
