Chartrand presents "The Cigar Box" series which explores the possibilities of assemblage cigar boxes and mixed media to create her rich 3-dimensional collection consisting of powerful and resilient iconic storytelling. 'The Cigar Box" series invites you into a world of global slave trade perspectives, dimensional assemblage cigar boxes incorporate found objects such as keys, coins/paper money, and hand painted papers. This body of work offers knowledge and research into the deeper meaning of how the Global transatlantic exploitation of African Slaves through their forced cultivation & harvesting of tobacco, fueled world-wide Black Gold commerce.

This series bridges the gap and connects the major players of global slave trade; "The Fabulous-6" - United States of America, Britain/England, France, the Netherlands/Dutch, Portugal and Spain, and were the first incarnation of a modern day National Global Organizations (NGO) and the major Global exporters of African Slaves. Out of this chaos, greed and brutality, ascends a dynamic story of survival of the African peoples through the African Diaspora.

Key Symbols: Money=Colonialism, Commerce, and Greed
Keys= A slaves Angel of Freedom or a powerful mechanism that slave-masters/mistress could only use. Locks=Bondage and the preservation of human limitations
