This was actually a project I for one of my Sociology classes at UCR, as well as my first attempt at creating a video. I was given four terms, "The Jungles" "Cabrini Green" "Hunters Point" and "The 5th Ward" and it was my job to find the common elements between them. It was obvious that these were all poor, low income housing areas that were home to some of the most violent projects in America. After more exploration, I found another common theme...genetrification.
Gentrification is defined as:
1. The buying and renovation of houses and stores in deteriorated urban neighborhoods by upper- or middle-income families or individuals, thus improving property values but often displacing low-income families and small businesses.
2. The restoration and upgrading of deteriorated urban property by middle-class or affluent people, often resulting in displacement of lower-income people.

  • A new Target is going up at the Cabrini sight, and a Apple Store opened like 2 blocks away in Lincoln Park

  • @eaguir3 A lot has changed.

  • the key is education. Respect your teachers, and your classrooms instead of disregarding your intelligence. If you continue to fall prey to the myth that selling drugs and gang banging is the way out of ghettos and projects, then you will never become part of the change that is necessary. Ice-T said the lethal weapon is the mind. This video is in need of gentrification.

  • @MrBrillare I hope you get a chance to watch the second part.

  • (con'td) by very BS said here in most of these posts. All of it is ignorance! Unbelievable. I'm raising two boys in this world on my own, single mom, I came from a middle class upbringing and b/c of being a single parent I have struggled. I've needed government subsidized housing. I see the problems in the SYSTEM, BUT how do I explain the stupidity of comments like these?? Remember those that have lead our nation and rallied for rights for ALL, you fall into those "buckets" somewhere. We all do.

  • @EKRBarnes Thank you. I hope you watch part 2.

  • I made it out! I was born in Cabrini Green in 1974 -I live in Kansas City now. I will always remember growing up in Cabrini Green in the Late 70's and early 80's with my Great Grandparents on Larrabee-It was rough for me being a mixed-race child.

  • @boogiechillen123 did you watch part 2 or read the info in the description?

  • Why have the neighborhoods been allowed to deteriorate? Do you really have to ask that? Look what lives in them. that's why they deteriorate.

  • what's even sadder is that these idiots are proud of their hoods. and that's why you are still there and always will be you dumb niggers.

  • I LOVE YOUR DOC CHECK OUT A KID WITH A KID ON MY PAGE

  • If we the "target people" go along with the plan & allow our property values to drop & don't improve our own neighborhoods how can we then complain because what we allowed to happen is no longer tolerated! Stop bitching & take control of what's ours & no one can wrongfully take it! What we allowed to happen in our areas allows them to then "Legally Take it" the Same way churches take property all the time with imminent domain laws!

  • @billybassman21 Ok, I hear that comment a lot and there may be some truth to it, however, who are the ones that trash, damage, vandalize and deface the buildings and Crimes committed left and right? Did an army of white people go through the hood and fuck the place up overnight? This is why everyone (not just white people) who is not black has the worst impression of black people, because they don't even respect themselves or each other so why should anyone else care about them?

  • Glad they ran those ghetto ass people out and are using the land for something productive. Public housing and government assistance keeps the poor down.

  • 773 represent man. chicago! 773, 608, 630 and 312.!

  • this is sad. glad i'm not poor.
