SHAKESPEAR:
An American-Iranian journalist has been sentenced to jail by an Irannian court. She is convicted of spying for the United States. The U.S. calls charges against the journalist 'baseless' and demands her immediate release.
Roxana Saberi, sentenced to eight years in jail for spying for the United States by an Iranian court.

In a speedy turn of events, the Iranian-American journalist learnt her sentence just five days after she was put on trial.

At first she faced accusations of buying alcohol, and later of working as a journalist without a valid press card.

Arrested in January, she's a citizen of both the U.S. and Iran, but Tehran doesn't recognize dual nationality.

Saberi had spent six years in Iran studying and writing a book.

A freelance reporter for the BBC and National Public Radio -- she denies the charges.

Her father gave this interview on America's NPR:

[Roxana Saberi's Father]:
"She is very weak and frail, last time we saw...and she wanted to go on hunger strike but we persuaded her not to do so. And after this most probably she will, even though when we visit her we will ask her not to do so. But she is quite depressed about this matter and she wants to go on hunger strike. And if she does she's so frail it can be dangerous to her health."

In a letter to Tehran's prosecutor, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad -- shown here at Saturday's military parade -- said she must have her legal right to defend herself.

Her lawyer welcomed the leader's comments and said he plans to appeal.

U.S. President Barack Obama's spokesman said he was "deeply disappointed" at the verdict.

And has demanded her immediate release.

It's feared the jailing could become a source of tension between Iran and the U.S. at a time when Washington is trying to reach out to the Islamic Republic after three decades of mutual mistrust.
