Please Please PLEASE look after your skin and wear broad spectrum sunscreen every day... and reapply!

Broad spectrum sunscreens provide protection from UVA (the rays that cause aging and skin cancer) and UVB rays (the rays that cause sunburn). If a product says SPF and it doesn't say anything about broad spectrum protection or UVA rays, chances are you're not fully protected.

To provide broad spectrum protection the product must contain at least one of these ingredients:
avobenzone (Parsol 1789 or butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane)
titanium dioxide
zinc oxide
Tinosorb
Mexoryl SX (ecamsule)

Check out Part 2 for what I use on my skin.

  • Brilliant video! I thought I knew enough about sun protection but I really learnt more from you. Even from living in Australia I feel I haven't been properly educated about sunscreen in cosmetics. I think it is something women (and men) should be taught about. (i'm guilty of buying the Laura Mercier tinted moisturiser).

  • @gabi8882 excellent! something that only just clicked for me recently is that sunburn is a different process to the one that causes premature aging and skin cancer, as a result your skin needs to be protected from both with different ingredients.

i love the laura mercier tinted moisturiser and i use it every day, but i only think of it as a light foundation, not a sunscreen.

  • Great video!!

Your so right on with makeup that just has spf and not broad spectrum sunscreen. They need to be putting in broad spectrum in the makeup! :)

  • @HappieBeauty it's so frustrating. why do cosmetics companies mislead people? either provide the full protection or none at all so people know whether they need something else.

  • nice video! good to see there are Australians who are taking care in the sun. It seems like a lot of the girls I meet in SA worship the sun. When I wear a big hat or stay in the shade at the beach they make fun, but they are already getting wrinkles! I actually need to schedule my first mole scan, my dad's had skin cancer a few times and I want to stay extra safe.

    p.s. you have great skin!

  • @fallenangel7431 i've had my fair share of teasing. it's so mean and ignorant to tease someone for taking care of their skin!

my dad has so many moles and sunspots burnt off. i had my skin checked a couple of months ago and the dr pinpointed one freckle that i need to keep an eye on for melanoma. scary!

  • Thank you for stressing the usage of sunscreen :) I use Chanel's and DiorSnow sunscreen and they both contain 19% of zinc oxide woot woot :) I can't wait to see your sunscreens. By the way have you heard of SkinCeuticals? They make amazing protective serum to fight and protect the cells DNA. Its not a sunscreen but think of it as a suncreen which protects your skin at a cellular level. I also want to try Armani Crema Nera Extrema serum because it helps to protect your cells DNA as well.Take Care

  • @gemsmaquillage i know! and so many people (me included, in the past) see SPF and think "great!" when it's not what they think it is.

if a product doesn't provide broad spectrum protection, it's not worth bothering. it would be more ethical of the manufacturer to NOT put any sun protection in a product so that people don't buy it under the mistaken belief that their skin is fully protected.

looking forward to your video! i'm planning to post my products video tomorrow.

  • Excellent video! I am working on a sunscreen video covering my favourites and talking about the different ratings. So many people are uneducated about it and think its silly to even consider it, it makes me simultaneously sad and angry! xx
