As we move into the future, educators are becoming more and more creative with how technology can advance our education tools. Applying the principles of "Second Life" virtual reality to a classroom setting, innovators at Case Western University have opened up a new world of educational possibilities. Second Life teaching is a powerful example of how we can expand the boundaries of the classroom and the scope of student-teacher interactions.

  • "A very traditional university environment"

Shows scene of a guy on a unicycle.

    #LOL

  • I think people in the comment section are slightly too negative to this. If universities are reporting a 30% increase in academic succes among students (see 1:59) due to this, then it's obviously not a bad idea.

  • I have seen internet content delivery systems that required interaction in order to see the next page. Would we need teachers to ask every student in class for permission to continue? I prefer the ability to see straight lectures or reviews that will continue until I interrupt the presentation for clarification. This would allow me to digest content during other activities such as exercising.

  • This reminds me of the efforts to provide more ways to keep student attention, like including video game rewards.

A simple lecture, review, overview and test practice help. Adding attention retaining qualities are distracting when looking at a dictionary or during a quick lecture, review or test.

Are we caught up in the ability to create virtual worlds and forgetting what student's need? I have seen too many times where focus on environment reduces functionality.

  • perhaps we should focus more on practicums and experiential learning instead of interacting through a screen...

I mean, if I want to practice Spanish, I'll befriend a native speaker in real life.

  • Hello Matrix.

  • It seems.... a little too flashy. This could have been done in a far simpler way.

  • I can understand the second life Spanish deal, but you're not going to get any real practice doing "role playing doctor"... Kids can do that on club penguin all the time. That's just an excuse to not actually teach your class real people skills.

  • Lol this news is so 3 years ago :P

You people better not miss out on this one!

  • Im not sure about this second life...I would have liked a longer vid than this 2:35 long bullshit

  • lol secondlife
