Research indicates that up to 90% of your success in life is due to your ability to network. With a little practice, you can make networking an art not an accident. It's no longer optional but a criteria for future success.
To facilitate great networking, it's important that your connections be segmented into three categories:
1.Those you already have
2.Those you need to have next
3.Those you hope to have in the future

Choose Your Networking Groups Strategically
Next, make a list of everyone you know who has some connection to the industry or position that you are interested in.
Use your detective skills.
Trace old employers that could potentially help.
Everyone has a network.
JOIN

1.Functions sponsored by your organization
2.Networking organizations
3.Professional and Trade Associations
4.Industry-Specific Organizations
5.Chambers of Commerce
6.Volunteer Groups
7.Hobby/Health/Sports Activities
8.College/University Alumni Groups
9.Religious Organizations
10.Kid Connections

Tips

*Join where you have something to offer and find out what they can offer; contacts, exposure, experience. It's all there in exchange for a little effort.

*Trade your network. The most efficient way to expand your network is to trade networks with others.

*Offer to help as often as you can. People will be inclined to help you back.

*Record all networks in a software program, including special information like birthdays, hobbies, special events to follow up on.

Diversify. Don't build a network like yourself.

  • If you and your company have integrity and produce products that you are proud of and stand behind 100%, then there would be zero need for your net-working. The mere fact that you as you say - put out a false persona (lest you post things about yourself that you know your future employer will not like), highlights the fact that you have no integrity or indeed pride.

As for the art of schmoozing - the tile speaks for itself. Filthy, false and mis-leading. A reflection of corporate values.

  • This was useful, thank you very much.
