Ugie Emobo

This ceremony recalls the epic battle between Oba Esigie and his half-brother Arhuaran in the 16th century. In victory, Esigie donned a cursed bead and became temporarily mad. His Ogbelaka guild danced him back to Benin for a cure. The Oba dances with Ogbelaka in memory of the event, driving evil "to Udo," the town that was Arhuaran's stronghold.

BENIN wasn't a Kingdom in acient times, it was an empire extending from OKAH and ONITSHA in recent Anambra state, all through the DELTA and EDO regions to the recent day BENIN Republic via many of the recent day ONDO, southern part of OGUN and the whole of LAGOS states.
