While laying out to make the score Gazza somehow deflected to disc up and still managed to balance it on his back. He says, "I knew it was there and so didn't want to drop it - but clearly as the alert defense (Tom Rogacki yellow shirt - Australia) realized this does not deem control!
Hence I carefully grabbed the disc just before they arrived to score".

Manuka the 2004 New Zealand Mixed Ultimate team in an exhibition match against some traveling Australians at NZ Nationals in preparation for going to World Champs in Finland. (Manuka ended up taking the Bronze Medal)

Thanks to Gazza #46!!!

  • ultimate frisbee.. lol

  • @yeerkjerky86 Mehh yh I see where you're coming from, but in a situation like that time move slow and your mind works like twice as fast. From my first experience, I knew I couldn't make the catch, so I thought "smack it to stall it's position, so maybe I can break my fall then catch it", which came into my mind quicker than a second. So I tried to smack it back a little, hoping that I could turn then catch it before it hits the ground. But I took long to turn and it landed like this instead.

  • @JustElijah Oh, I'm sure you can try to do a trick catch and succeed, but what I think is funny is the commentator saying "you can tell it was purposeful," as though it definitely was not an accident. Also, the guy in the video doesn't seem to even realize that the disc is there until he starts to get up. Maybe unrelated, but if you try this out of "desperation", wouldn't simply trying to catch the disc be the better option? Like "catch your D's so the offense doesn't have another chance?

  • @yeerkjerky86 Well logic will tell you, he didn't try to catch it by smacking it with his hand. It was more of an experimental catch, yes; but that doesn't mean it was at all an accident or fluke. I can vouch for that, because I've done it a few times out of desperation.

  • @yeerkjerky86 heard of sarcasm?
