@bendkafka I agree. All chess players seek "the best move" and the top-players even more so, hence nakas inner fury at himself for not finding it here. As for being arrogant? Compared to kasparov, nakamura is a choir boy in the arrogance league!

@MrPeto1212 1.f4 is no real surprise these days but boy did i get a nasty jolt right from the opening the other day in a $20 game of blitz. 1.d4 Nf6 (my usual reply.) 2.g4!? I nearly fell out of my chair. Never faced this before. Later i learned it's called the devins gambit. My cursed computer had never tested me with this and i'd never faced it.

After settling down, but with a priceless minute wasted, i lost quickly. I've since studied it from the black side and now have my pet lines ready.

@Kasuh3 True, but birds opening just does not have "the 1st-move punch" that most white openings enjoy. Look at the stats, how many times does birds get played? Very rarely,and when played few players win with it, even at blitz. A better ranked player will usually win with it against a weaker opponent but thats because his middle-game and endings carry the day. Birds is not even a serious surprise weapon at club-level these days. Though that said our champ lost in a blitz final against it (!?)

@janweltevreden It may not be feared, meaning people won't study it as often. To those who do study it will have an advantage in blitz since they don't have to calculate as much while the clock is ticking.

@Kasuh3 In a way you're right, but in a way you're wrong. In the 70s and even in the 80s an occasional 1.f4!? produced an upset, but these days the top players in computer training-games programme their computers to play say every 5th game an irregular opening and birds opening naturally comes up but is not really feared anymore, has been completely de-fanged, and most top players have their "pet-lines" ready for such off-beat openings. However, in BLITZ tournaments birds is CERTAINLY playable!

@uchihadante77 Are you saying Grand masters can't use the bird's opening. That's like saying you cant eat chicken anymore. Besides blitz is also a mind game you want to confuse your opponent into making mistakes. He used the opening because no one expects him to do that opening. Its not childish its BLITZ you want to confuse you opponent and make him spend more time, as suppose to "playing by the book"

@bendkafka not arrogance? he is using the bird´s opening in a world championship match against GM´s of 2600 to 2800; if that´s not arrogance then i dont know what it is;i mean i like Nakamura but he should grow up a little.Just watch him in his game against Mamedov and you will know what im talking about:)

@nicoeste8765 It is a draw. Nakamura is grimacing, because he can't get his king through to support an advance of his pawn from e6 to the queening square, and that's the only chance he has to win.
