MILSPRAY Military Technologies shows off their latest defense technologies that saves lives to soldiers in Iraq and overseas. The New Jersey based company's latest development is a specialty coating called Krpytolite, that is capable of withstanding and minimizing an IED Blast.
Insurgents are consistently and successfully adapting their weapon of choice, the IED, to exploit weaknesses in U.S. military armored vehicles. The existing armoring solutions such as the MRAP, Stryker, LAVS, and armored HMMWVS are faced with new and ever evolving threats. The latest Explosively Formed Penetrator (EFP) insurgent roadside weapon sends hull fragments, equipment debris, and the penetrating slugs themselves tearing through the interior of U.S. military vehicles wounding or killing vulnerable occupants. Over $3 billion has been spent on armoring solutions and many of these vehicles have been rendered ineffective.
MILSPRAY's Blast Resistant Coating is a solution to this problem. The raw material component of Kryptolite™ has been thoroughly tested and/or characterized by the Marine Warfighting Lab (Quantico - Ballistic Field Trials), the Naval Surface Warfare Command (Dahlgren), the Army Research Laboratory, the Marine Corps Logistics Command, the Naval Surface Warfare Command (Carderock), the Air Force Research Laboratory, and Homeland Security. Original testing was performed under the name Project Dragonshield. Test results are classified but available to those holding appropriate clearance.

The blast resistant coating material is applied over existing armor systems and will substantially enhance the current blast protection level. Kryptolite™ is a multifunctional, multilayer coating system that is fully integrated with a layer of CARC. This final layer of CARC preserves the chemical and bio agent resistance and signature reduction properties of the original finish. The entire coating system is a spray application, and is offered in our mobile, field deployable system. Kryptolite™ is an extremely lightweight material that is applied both over the existing vehicle armor and throughout the interior. It is this interior application that truly raises the level of protection and survivability by insulating the war fighter from blast fragments. Application thickness is varied dependent on the vulnerability of the vehicle occupants.
For example, most IED casualties occur at the lower body extremities where vests and helmets are of little use. Since the typical IED blast location is the lower portion or undercarriage of the vehicles, MILSPRAY Kryptolite™ is applied much more substantially to the undercarriage and in place of the floor mats, as well as under the vehicle seats, in wheel wells, and on rocker panels. Enhanced protection is provided where it is needed most, while vehicle stability and weight are not compromised.
Another benefit of utilizing the Kryptolite™ lightweight armor enhancement coating is that it can be applied to disabling vehicle points such as transmission control units (TCU) and battery compartments. In HMMWVs, these compartments are under passenger seats, and there exists only a piece of thin aluminum between these critical vehicle components and the IED blast.
Casualties often occur not only from the initial blast, but when vehicles become disabled as a result of the blast. The use of Kryptolite™ to coat and protect these critical vehicle component compartments increases survivability by preventing vehicle disablement. A unique feature of Kryptolite™ is that it is a self healing coating. This makes the material ideally suited for fluid containment. Water storage tanks, trailers, fuel tanks, and other fluid storage or transport vehicles benefit from the spray application of Kryptolite™.
MILSPRAY is currently applying Kryptolite™ Light Weight Blast Resistant Coating, under contract, to USMC HMMWV beds. The complete armor enhancement solution can be provided on-site or in theater by MILSPRAY technicians utilizing our portable Field Deployable Blast Coating Facilities.
MILSPRAY's Blast Resistant Coating is also ideally suited for Building Fortification efforts. Embassies and other high security government buildings benefit from the added ballistic and blast protection afforded by MILSPRAY's Kryptolite Blast Resistant Coating.
