The Solon Turman was built in 1961 and served as a freighter for the Lykes Brothers Steamship Co for 27 years until 1988 when it was traded in for a newer ship at the MARAD Suisun Bay Reserve (also known as the Mothball Fleet) in Martinez, California. On February 3rd 2011 the ship was brought to Mare Island where it will be dismantled and recycled over the next few months by Allied Defense Recycling. The ship weighs almost 10,000 tons and is 592 feet long with a 69 foot beam. This video was filmed in one day on February 3rd. It is compiled as a timelapse at various speeds. some footage was shot in real time and some at 1fps and some at .5fps it was then produced and joined together in HD to create a smooth visual experience.
