There's a secret inside the bonus stages, which you apparently haven't figured out yet: if there's a group of blue spheres wider than 2 rows, try making the spheres on the outside red.
The result is that the blue spheres in the middle (and the first row of red ones on the outside) becomes rings

actually this game is not complete..... it was originally going to be released combined with sonic&knuckles in one game, but was separated due to cart cost constraints..... so in my opinion sonic 3&knuckles is the best sonic game. it has ALL the levels all the plotline and three characters to play with.......plus it has hyper sonic and super mecha sonic!
