The 2009 Nissan 370Z is lit for the cameras tonight, and the bubble of white light around it holds back the darkness of this parking lot in Los Angeles. The Z-car believers have come to see the car in its first public showing, and Randy Rodriguez is one of them.

Rodriguez has come a long way to be here. Raised in British Columbia, his family ran a small gas station and car repair business and came to specialize in Nissans. His first car was a Nissan 240Z that he rebuilt with his own hands, and he's owned 10 early Zs over the years, though he's still only 31.

As with all Z-car people, Rodriguez doesn't quite fit in the box where you find most car enthusiasts; he's a little out of the mainstream, a little more open to doing things differently, and a little more serious about cars in way that only someone who has had to bring old, second-hand beaters back to life can be.

Rodriguez is exactly the person for whom this new Z-car is meant. Probably there's some kind of magic at work in the fact that Randy Rodriguez's day job is at Nissan Design America, and he was the one who first sketched the lines of what has become the 2009 Nissan 370Z.

  • @MagicAyrtonforever Yeah, I hope I can get another one too, but I know it wont be for couple years. Enjoy your track day. Cheers

  • @tootsiejoon :-) Nissan are constantly improving the 370Z too, maybe a revised version soon.. hope you can get another one sometime, I am going to do a track day soon with mine. cheers.

  • @MagicAyrtonforever Yes, TT is FWD and yes Z is better looking. No argue there. I miss mine!

  • @tootsiejoon isn't the Audi TT front wheel drive? who cares about looks, My Z craps on all overpriced TT's and fyi looks better too.

  • @glitle4808 I have got a 4.7 0-60 and a 13.3 1/4 in my Z too

  • @Makadonska27 I called Nissan Directly and the representative I spoke with said I had an unusually high amount of repairs but that they would not repair it or lemon it. I will give Nissan this the cost of owning it wouldn't have been as bad but the dealership refused to do warranty work. But when compared to the GM truck I had and the Ford Expedition this car has been a POS. Especially considering I'd take the Ford in the Dunes and really drove the Ford hard and had no problems.

  • @Makadonska27 How many miles did you put on it? Once I hit 50 or 60 thousand miles things really started to go wrong quick. The head light replacements cost me $1500 on their own. It's a fun car but the reliability isn't that great and from what I have heard that's fairly true statement but that most people end up wrecking the car before the 50k mile marker (when problems start). If I had to guess I've spent 7500-9500 over 6 years of ownership that doesn't include current repairs needed.

  • @DorkVader26 Must admit the replacement parts are pretty steep. I had a stone damage the front window and was charged 1300 GBP to replace it by Autoglass but in terms of reliability I had no probs at all.

  • @Makadonska27 because they couldn't find the short in the wiring that was blowing them. I had a major oil leak at about 68-70 thousand miles that cost $800 to repair. Had some other repair (car wouldn't idle and it was running like crap) that cost another 750 or so. It's again having problems (smoking and idling really ruff) no idea what's wrong now. The head lights don't last more then 4 years before they start leaking water into them (especially the driver side). Plastics are falling apart

  • @Makadonska27 My 350z that I bought brand new in 2004 has been one of the most expensive cars I have owned. Pads and rotors don't last more then 15 thousand miles. I had to replace all the power switches for everything windows and seats. Heated seats never worked for crap. Stereo is blown out (I tried to get Nissan to fix that but they said it still works so they wouldn't replace the speakers). Cig lighter never worked (lasted about 3 months after purchase) then they refused to change the fuses
