Floodwaters in the US have swallowed up more farmland, resulting in billion-dollar losses and fueling global food inflation fears.
It's estimated that 5 million acres across the Midwest have been ruined and will not produce a crop this year. This is the worst flooding in the Midwest in 15 years. It has swamped vast sections of America's farm belt and forced tens of thousands of people from their homes.
The cost of the disaster may end up rivaling the 1993 Midwest floods that caused more than 20 billion dollars in damage and led to 48 deaths. This month's flooding has caused few deaths. But the damage has yet to be fully assessed.
