@JerkyChid In the words of Guthrie - Steal from 1 person and it's called theft. Steal from many and it's called research ;)

Jerry Donahue plucks the words right out of my mouth...

ibanezbloke - the name says it all.

@JerkyChid yeah covers and tributes are an exception, i meant calling something your own..
-
Somewhat but more like building upon a foundation. Though if you don't change something more from where it came from (make it your own) then you are borrowing; like if you were doing a cover or a tribute. For example Jimi Hendrix and the songs All Along the Watchtower, Wild Thing, etc.

@JerkyChid stopping at 1 is stealing...using all 3 is borrowing

The guy is great. Developing style of one's own is tough.
Over and over again I hear this after hearing it first from my art professor (or perhaps I'm just more aware of it now).
the 3 Rules of the Arts:
1. Steal everything
2. Improve it to suit you
3. Make it your own
too many people stop at step 1; masters use all and go beyond
