On double play throws from short stop or third base to second base I like to execute a cross over pivot which allows a 2nd baseman with a weak arm to #1.clear the runner #2. have momentum #3 a clear shot during throws to 1st base. I find it much more efficient to split the base in half step on the infield 1st. base side of the base with the left foot & crossover with the right foot which gives me more runner clearance momentum, throwing velocity & closer to 1st.
It depends how the throw from your shortstop or third basemen is. If he throws it to my left I'm able to step across and throw, if its thrown to my right I use the momentum going to my right to step back and make the throw.
The best way to turn a double play as a second baseman if you have time is to get your left foot on the opposite side of the both stepping toward the ball as you catch it, get your right foot plant down and throw. This makes the throw a shorter distance and the time to catch and release the ball much quicker. If you don't have time use step back towards rf or step back toward center. Never use straddle bag unless you are receiving a throw from the catcher on a steal. Ask any college coach.
@limes14@limes14 - I'm a dumbass?? Well if ya haven't noticed.. your comment has been removed! Not by me either. So obviously they thought you were wrong! I don't blame them because your comment was nonsense! Your comment was... Don't time it but don't stand at the bag either?? You have no idea obviously! You must be playing a low grade buddy because if you have time to stand on the bag and run on the spot as you suggested then you must be recieving a throw from a young kid or old man!
Work constructively on all on all of the pivots, For those with not so strong throwing arms and basically staying out of the runners way with body movement going towards 1st. while cutting down throwing distance to me are excellent procedures to making successful double plays. I prefer the cross over pivot, I know several 2nd. basemen who went from back up status in high school to being excellent D-1 college players by executing cross over pivots.
Isn't that a plate he's turning the double play on?

This is the rest of my comment below.
It is also of the utmost importance to jockey in and square up to third base while
taking the throw in order to set up for making a good balanced throw to 1st. base.
