Allegro non troppo ma con brio - Piu allegro

Wartime recording from January 1945. First three movements were either not recorded, or are missing, I am not sure which. One can imagine how they must have been played as this movement is surely the culmination of what came before it.

  • second to NONE. Insurmountable!

  • Ever since Claudio Abbado spoke of Maestro Furtwangler to Isaac Stern at Carnegie Hall in 1996 I have been in love with this German conductor. We saw a clip of Furtwangler conducting this piece where he showed his love for the orchestra and the music. I've never gotten over that visual and musical experience and I also hear it now. This is indeed the best rendition I've ever heard. And I imagine the Gestapo inhibiting that poor audience from really cheering for this wonderful finale.

  • Thank so much for this.

  • Wow! I listen to this and I think I know what superman must feel like.

  • la plus belle symphonie jamais écrite.

  • His last performance in Nazi Germany before fleeing from the Gestapo to Austria and then Switzerland

  • Imagine what conditions these musicians must have played this in. It was January 1945 and Germany was in ashes and assuming this wasn't recorded in Switzerland, imagine how many of these musicians did not see the end of that war.

For them to have performed like this under conditions like these, makes this recording even more special. Oh and isn't it amazing the tapes didn't get lost or destroyed in the turbulent months and years of war and soviet command?

  • @edobruni There's another insane rendition, with BPO, live 1950 i believe. I think they have it here.

  • Glorious! The last minute or so must rate as some of the most exciting music ever composed. And this performance is just great.

  • What the hell!! Incredible!! Never heard such an energetic, dazzling and gorgeous interpretation of this finale!!! Thank you a lot!
