i lost a baby to anencephaly in 2008 an i took my prenatal vitamins even before i found out i was pregnant.the doctor said its something that happenes.to the best of us.

Your little baby girl was so very beautiful. I just finished reading "Summer" by Karen Kingsbury-- and one of the main characters in the book had a baby with anencephaly. I cried and cried and cried while reading the end of the book. I'm so glad you got to meet your little girl.

This is a result of the neural tube failing to close as the fetus develops. Folic acid is absolutely essential to prevent this common and always fatal birth defect.

Folic acid has certainly been shown to help in the prevention of this condition, but it can still happen. Current research, that we're a part of, is trying to pin the condition on genetic factors. Hopefully more will come out soon.
