Sun-Ra said that one of his main influences was the great band leader "Fletcher Henderson". In fact, I remember one concert where he di the first 5 minutes of Henderson's stuff, before slowly going 'from in to out,..... to far out. So it stands to reason, that even if many folks might not have understood where he was coming from,..... he certainly know, not only where he was coming from,... but also where he was going, and where he was taking his music.

check out the documentary , a joyful noise,and listen how john gilmore(he taught some of ra s concepts to coltrane) was astounded when he realized how musically advanced ra was and compared him to monk and bird and felt he had even PASSED them !!!! schizophrenic my ass, this man was a GENIUS!!!!!!!!!

european animation , i think you are right. i also feel american society kills the creativity in us by demanding MORE OF THE SAME...when something here in the U.S.. is successful,whatever it is, i.e., music, clothing or even toothpaste mass imitation follows.Translation: its more important to be successful than creative....Sun ra , thankfully never bought into that lol

@blacknuss6 I'm reminded of a discussion I had one time about different ways to dance. I talked about dancing in water, dancing with bare socks as a scratch dance on a treadmill, and a couple others. After that conversation I concluded that most people who find it hard to be original do so because they did something in a very particular way that led to no results and were unable to open their mind to the unique possibilites which ought to be easy to obtain to begin with.

@ppc1989ark Amazing comment
After several weeks of Sun Ra in a class I'm taking, I'm still not sure if he was totally insane or ahead of the curve. I think maybe both. Like a lot of ground-breakers, he had some pretty wild stuff in his head... but he really took jazz in a new direction and DID something with his music.

i give high praise to RA because as a fellow musician, i know how hard it is to sound original and not like another card board cut-out. this brother was clearly light years ahead of us....
