This is the most ridiculous queue that I have ever had the misfortune to be a part of...it took me 3 and a half hours to get to the front. It is a line in Heathrow airport that is simply a transit line to get to Terminal 4...My original flight had landed at...Terminal 4. So naturally I had to go out and then go back in again. Does this make sense? No it does not. And when I asked why there was such a long delay for such a simple procedure as going between flights I was told "It's always like this before Christmas." Do you think thay had extra staff on? No, they did not. And to top it all off, they, of course, lost my luggage. I shouldn't complain too much though, on that day a further 8999 people had their luggage lost as well. So the lesson is...STAY AWAY FROM HEATHROW!!!!!

If you go through security quickly at Heathrow all the time you should be a lucky person. Because most of the time, Heathrow is just a mess and is also served by some rude staff.
I must be lucky, then, or may be because I usually use T3, which is not the busiest one. But for example, in Stansted I usually take ages to go through, most of the times because of the poor unexperienced tourists who reach the top of the queue and they are not ready. Then in Luton I spend almost an hour, and the staff didn't provide passengers with the plastic bags for the liquids, as they had to buy them for 1pound, so everything was simply chaotic. Gatwick was quite fine though.
In fact, it's best for you to use Gatwick. But the other airports doesn't sound as bad as Heathrow, even with the lines. I also heard T4 is the busiest.
I've never been to Heathrow so I don't know...but many airports have train system that connects between terminals. In Atlanta Airport in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, you have the option to walk or take the train between terminals
