At 44 mile range, the mirror flash is visible, but faint. It is easier to see if you play in HQ mode (click the HQ button below the image). The flashing is at the horizontal center in the frame, and vertically halfway up the mountains. It was a clear winter day for the Los Angeles area, about 1PM. We could both see each other's signal flashes with the naked eye. We used 3"x5" MIL-M-18371E glass signal mirrors with retroreflective mesh aimers. For more about signal mirrors, including how to use them, and how retroreflective aimers work, see:

  • Thanks. From what I hear there is nothing like glass.

All the unbreakable new fangled stuff pales compared to glass

  • We did some mirror flashing between Merced, ca and Los Banos, Ca one exceptionally clear Central Valley afternoon with larger engineering mirrors (about 12"x12") and the flash was like an amazing jewell flash on the horizon.
