With U.S. unemployment now more than 8 percent, times are tough for many Americans. But some New Yorkers who've been hit by job loss are choosing to give back.
Lori Garbacz was laid off in July. She used to run events for a private equity firm. Now she's using her free time to volunteer and possibly network.

[Lori Garbacz, Volunteer]:
"Right now, jobs with recruiters—the normal way you're going along—it's just not happening so, you've got to really think outside the box and network and you just never know on a chance meeting with maybe another volunteer you might find something but above all it keeps you positive and that's why I like doing it."

As more and more New Yorkers lose their jobs, organizations like New York Cares have been flooded by people willing to work for free.

New York Cares now has 20 percent more volunteers than in the fall, says Executive Director Gary Bagley.

[Gary Bagley, New York Cares Executive Director]:
"There are a great number of unemployed people in New York City right now. We're unfortunately seeing the numbers continue to go up and we're seeing nearly 30 percent of the new volunteers that are coming through our door have mentioned that there's been a change in their work situation and that's one of the reasons that they're coming now to volunteer."

New York Cares' volunteers can choose from tutoring children to walking shelter dogs. Some, like Christina Chang, don't have full-time work and appreciate the flexible hours on offer at the non-profit.

[Christina Chang, Volunteer]:
"Now I currently work just part-time—two days a week—and I decided that since I have all this free time it would be great to just give back to the community and use my time productively."

But the recession isn't the only reason New York's unemployed are volunteering. According to New York Cares, 1 out of 4 new volunteers says President Barack Obama's emphasis on civic responsibility was why he or she decided to sign up.
