  • On PBS, in the early 70's, Lowell Thomas hosted a weekly program, with these newsreels. Anyone remember it ?? great stuff, very interesting to watch years later on utube, i never got to see these before a movie, too young.(48).

  • @n1uvu I do, too; it was called "Lowell Thomas Remembers." Used this same musical cue, with some period footage, including one of a Fox cameraman being lowered on a boom.

  • This is a section of the first theme from "World Events" march by John Stepan Zamecnik, a composer from Cleveland of Czech origins who composed it in 1935.

  • Is this the entire piece, or is there actually more written as a concert march. Whoever wrote it was a genius at counter melody (trumpet section).

  • Yes, 'Rlotpir'- in early "M*A*S*H" episodes (also produced by 20th Century-Fox), segments from various Movietone reels of the 1950-'52 period would occasionally be seen to establish the "time frame", and often reflect the story about to unfold at the 4077th.

This title sequence is the most famous, used in the early '40s, with Lowell Thomas' name above the title [he was also famous for his nightly 15 minute news/commentary program on NBC {later, CBS} radio, at 6:45pm(et)].

  • The name of the march used by FOX for the newsreel opening is called "World Events" Lowell Thomas narrated, orchestrations by Theodore Detida.

  • @Rlotpir1972 absolutely, it was a fox production, after all. the episodes related to newsreels recording various events at the mash unit

  • Didn't some of those newsreels used in some M*A*S*H episodes?

  • What time is this from?
