Why does she still have a chain in her neck?

They don't allow westerners to go there during the training (I wonder why?). Instead, I went to the Elephant Nature Park in northern Thailand, the only true sanctuary for elephants in the country, where the founder, Lek Chailert, told us volunteers all about it. She saw it herself, and I take her for her word. If you've never heard of her, look her up and you'll see what international awards she's won and what incredible work she's done. I can tell you love elephants; check her for yourself.

If you love elephants, instead of going to these cheezy shows where elephants are abused behind the scenes (they are, you just don't see it, trust me) go to the Elephant Nature Park, the only true sanctuary for the species in Thailand. There, the rescued elephants get to play, socialize, and recover from the horrid abuses they've received. No performing tricks, no rides. And visitors get to help feed and bathe them, a much more rewarding experience than watching them paint under intimidation.

Yes, some places do abuse them, I realize this. But, in your infinite wisdom, journeyman47, you know this as truth? You've witnessed the elephants at Mesa Elephant Camp be abused and miss treated with your very own eyes? I did, while traveling India for three months. It's very sad and infuriating. However, what I witnessed at this camp was love and tender care for these beautiful talented creatures!!! Believe it or not you don't need to mistreat them to teach them. You need a lesson in tact.
