This is cool variation taught to me about 10 years ago by the guy who now plays with Jesus diez. His name was Javier Navarette, he played at my wedding too!

Filmed this with a kodak zi6 (flip version from kodak) in VGA mode

  • Cool! So you are basically doing a one-hand tumbao with the right hand with a left-hand drag double accent between each beat of the tumbao, making each beat of the tumbao a TRIP-a-let, where the TRIP is the right hand and the "-a-let" is the left hand drag double. At least that is what I think I am seeing and hearing. Thanks for sharing this.

  • That's it man, the left had is just doing a Heel-Toe and the right making the tumbao notes. If I get a chance I will post another slower version

  • hey mike how do you hear your playing ?

do you have a comptor or are you using something else....

  • I practice with headphones on even when I don't have music or a click going through them. They cancel out some of the highs and I can hear the tones better......not to mention my hearing is not the best after years of drumming.....so I try to wear ear protection on gigs also. I can hear the drums fine, they are not noise canceling headphones...just some decent sony model so the sound of the conga just comes through a little softer but plenty loud.

  • hey this is cool!!! lol =)

  • wow, nice playing! that is actually really tough to play at that speed. it's like a jeff porcaro halftime shuffle for congas

  • Great lessons, great videos. I like that you show it real time then slow. A lot of videos say 'lesson' but they're really just guys showing off. Keep it up Dave. I'll be watchin...

  • Cool! I grew up with Javier. Glad to see music being shared throughout the world, Good job bro.

  • I've never seen or heard that tumbao exercise/rhythm before. Talk about thinking outside the box--that was great!

  • This is tougher than nails to actually do. Awesome to be able to run it at the speed you do!

  • I'm going to try to do it slow??? when....it was all fast like you are playing at a band..........and the angle of the camera is hard to see what you are doing..

  • Sorry - I meant "Hey Dave..."
