Music: Alexander Borodin's String Quartet No. 2 in D Major: Third Movement: Notturno (Andante)
Director: Roger Allers (co-director of the Lion King)
Creation: The animation was created to originally be in Fantasia 2000 (a disney musical production thought up by Roy Disney. But, for whatever reason, it never made it's debut. It was later released on DVD in 2006 and can be found as an extra on "The Little Mermaid 2-Disc DVD Platinum Edition". It really is worth the buy.

Writer: Hans Christian Anderson
Published: 1845
About: Published by the same accredited writer who published the Little Mermaid, Hans Christian Anderson wrote this story to point out the oppression of children in Europe in that era. It was written nine years after his friend (Charles Dickens) wrote Oliver Twist to point out the same thing. In that time, children of lower class families often worked full time jobs, some as young as three. They earned a salary of pennies a week and did almost anything they could to survive. That included working in factories, becoming chimney sweeps, and more. Many of them died because of sickness, exposure to the elements, and/or hunger, and most of the upper class turned the blind eye. They removed themselves by settling in the countryside, where such problems were far away. It was Anderson's goal to bring these horrors to light so that children, like the little match girl, would be spared.

  • looks like mulan

  • I know. It does, doesn't it? I thought the exact same thing when I first saw it. ^_^

  • I know. I thought it was simply beautiful when I first heard it. It was supposed to be in Fantasia 2000, but the director was told it was too sad to put in, that they wanted a more upbeat and optimistic story. Oh, well...

  • I love this story. I grew up with it and it made, and still makes, me cry. It's such a sad and brutal story, yet strangely heartwarming and beautiful. Andersen was a genius. I'm also glad that disney didn't change that she dies at the end. It's the entire point of the story.

  • Actually, I don't feel sad about this at all! That's awkward, I actually felt really happy that she's away from all the madness. She died happily, and that was what it was all about.

Death is not at all brutal, she found heaven.

  • And to think that now we turn a blind eye to forced child labor and child slavery in other countries, profit always seems to be more important.

  • I always cry at this movie just because it makes me miss my own grandma terribly.
