How to Apply Different Materials to Different Vertices Blender 2.5.0

After struggling to find the answer, here it is:
How to Apply different materials to an object.

Blender 2.5

You don't have to create vertex groups to apply different colors or materials
to groups of vertices or vertex.

Sorry for the low volume. I got to figure out how to fix that. This video I used the Zoom H4 hooked to the computer as a mic with gain all the way up. But it is still too low. I may have to import it into an editing software and up the volume there. We'll see.

@carmine204 Just select the vertices a number of different ways in 'Edit' mode, then hit 'X' , then select 'Vertices' from that menu and BOOM!, they are gone. Went to Vertex heaven.
