My attempt at something better? that an elevator trap mechanism, mainly because I couldnt make and elevator properly, I sort of got it done but thought of this. Needs to be built into a box not and off we go sparrow trapping.
I had a trap like this that I made. I did not like having to touch the birds or try to chase them down inside the trap holding area. Once in hand I did not like the idea of having to kill them. I also left it out for a weekend and returned to find a very stressed out Cardinal in the trap. When Cardinals are stressed out they defecate 100's of times. Seeing this concentrated within the trap was heartbreaking and I retired the trap at once determined to build a better trap. Look up: AviTrap
Well, now that you moved you have time to perfect. Nothing wrong with having songbirds about your place. Getting rid of all these sparrows so I get songbirds to nest and stick around us a lotta work
Sadly I may become a 'flash in the pan man' as I have move from the house where all the sparrows were, which annoyed all Christ out of me. All I have nearby is song birds, magpies, honey eaters things like that, and the occassional myna, for which I have installed a nest trap, hopefully it works.
Feel free to make a trap using the three cans, and use it how you see fit. I donate it to the world, free of charge! ; )
looks like a good alternative to the traditional elevator mechanism...
i have some suggestions for improvement :
1)use the cans as molds, wrap wire mesh around them to get section a wire mesh tunnel. the bird may not want to enter a can but will feel more comfortable about wire mesh
2)place a perch inside each tunnel section of wire mesh, make sure the wire mesh sections are both wide enough and long enough in order to force the bird to hop onto the perch
I would make from formed cylinders of 1/4 inch hardware cloth or clear plastic (officemax folders). Use tiny rare earth magnets that do not touch but hold position with their attraction. One at the bottom and one each at the bottom of each can/cylinder (Hobby Lobby). Remember - don't let them touch.
The repeating traps have a small hinged hardware cloth door when in the trapped position that opens one way into the trap. Sparrows are tough birds and will push through in their trapped panic.
@biodot88 I know that only too well! I am trying to move house and have a few other things to do, feel free to copy the design though. 3 steel food cans, try to cut the circle out of the top, not the end off the can, which will weaken the can. A length of 1/2 copper pipe through the middle will make a good place to put an axle. Good luck with it but I am too busy ATM. cheers
Tell me When its finish.
It looks cool and i tink it gona work

Someone took your idea a step further and simply put the rotating cans on top of the trap. See video called " my new home made bird trap"
