Composer Mark Knopfler

To me this is Mark's masterpiece. The lyrics are very powerful and his guitar lines are some of the most moving I think I have ever heard. To me they bring to mind the horrible cost of war in lives and treasure.

This is a combination of arrangements. I started from a Dan Holloway arrangement. Then i added my own stuff.

The screened image of the ship is a photo of the USS Luce DD-522. My Father commanded that ship for most of the Pacific theater in World War II. Two months after he was assigned to another ship the Luce was sunk off the coast of Okinawa on May 4th of 1945 taking 157 souls to the bottom of the ocean. A year ago I attended the last reunion of the survivors of the sinking. It was a very moving experience. Many survivors still carry terrible memories and scars that affect them to this day.

From time to time we should reflect on the terrible cost of war. Maybe there are no winners in war rather, only survivors.

These mist covered mountains
Are a home now for me
But my home is the lowlands
And always will be
Some day you'll return to
Your valleys and your farms
And you'll no longer burn
To be brothers in arms

Through these fields of destruction
Baptisms of fire
I've witnessed your suffering
As the battles raged higher
And though they hurt me so bad
In the fear and alarm
You did not desert me
My brothers in arms

There's so many different words
So many different songs
We have just one world
But we live in different ones

Now the sun's gone to hill
And the moon's riding high
Let me bid you farewell
Every man has to die
But it's written in the starlight
And every line on your palm
We're fools to make war
On our brothers in arms

Danke. Das war meines Vaters Schlachtschiff im Zweiten Weltkrieg in den Pazifischen Ozean. Mein Vater war ihr Kapitän.

  • Good one! I've just discovered Dan Holloway too - great doable arrangements. Anyway - I loved your version.

    Thanks John,

Being new to finger-style I found some of the right hand stuff a bit of a challenge at first.

Then I tried to add some of Mark's original solo parts. It was a fun project.

    Cheers,

    allen
