What will journalism look like in 5 years? In 10? Is print dead? As part of a series from The Nation on the future of journalism, John Nichols gives his view on where the media is heading, and how the changes in journalism will impact political reporting.

there are ways to get governmental support of media while avoiding government control. one way is to give people an option that some amount of their taxes goes to an organization of their choosing. also, blanket postal and printing subsidies for legitimate organizations would be helpful without the government having influence on a case-by-case basis

Why have many newspapers gone out of business? Because their corporate owners refuse to let ther reporters do their jobs. And now we're supposed to subsidize them?

Nicols want govt. subsidies for newspapers. if you do that, you're subject to their control Doesn't that undermine the idea of a "free press"?
Also, if newspapers can be subsidized, why can't other things be subsidized as well? Nicols is forgetting that many people in the States think this is "socialism" (still a dirty word).

Yes, but before we move to asking for government funding for journalism, it's worth looking at how well or poorly public broadcasting has been able to resist political pressures. Can newspapers do better? Can an appropriate "arm's length" relationship be created that would guarantee journalistic independence without encouraging self-censorship? We should think very carefully about this before we reach for a solution that may be more fraught than it appears.

This is dead on correct. As a working journalist wth 20 years of experience I can tell you I've seen things fall apart from the inside. People have no idea how critical journalism is to their daily lives. It's not just prurient interest. It's the force that keeps police officers from using excessive force on a whim. It's the restraint that keeps a corrupt mayor from destroying your small business because of an old grudge.

Makes sense.

to a degree, I track with you. But for a large portion of the news consuming public, TV = Legitimacy. And they DON'T know they are being lied to. They are easy to dismiss, but as long as they are being molded into a cohesive block of obstructionists, it keeps us all in a holding pattern.
It is scary that so many journalists are losing their jobs. I agree that the government must intervene.

The Platform is not as important as supplying news. I mean real news, as opposed to the Policy that the media is spewing. Like we the people don't know when we are being lied to.
